I don’t mind books about the far experience, there are a lot of lovely ones out there, but I want them to be surprising and beautiful, and the book lacked metaphor and shyed away from showing depth. I gave the book 3.

I think this bobe, read in a deconstructionist lens, makes a lot of sense when deconstructing what “bones” are, as they signify the unending discovery of centers in our own lives.

I was remembering how much I enjoyed the Joy Luck Club and when this book was described as a similarly inter-generational story rich in cultural idiosyncrasies and very thoughtful, that resonated with me.

And while I favor character-driven fiction over plot-driven, the characters do have to drive something. Exposed again, this family’s wound is raw and toxic, but “Bone” is more than a novel about one young woman’s suicide; it is a study of three sisters and especially of their parents, who have worked themselves to the bone to survive.


No one, especially the protagonist, seemed to find any resolution or realization or purpose or acceptance in their suffering. It did not really have a plot, which was fine because it was short. Please provide an nyenne address.

Bone by Fae Myenne Ng. I really enjoyed this novel. Harper Collins- Fiction – pages. Now Leon, a merchant seaman with a habit of shipping out at times of family crisis, has moved into a seedy hotel and seems well on the way to becoming a derelict. Hard book for me to read at the beginning, but once I realized it was written, like Leon says about the ships moving 8 miles back to go nb mile forward, with flash backs as the narrative moved forward, it began to make more sense.

I know people, like Leila who struggles under the weight of responsibilities, real and imagined, placed on her shoulders, and Nina, whose way of dealing with a crisis blne to run away from it all and feel the full weight of the guilt afterwards, and realise that bereavement can never be avoided, it can only be postponed.

We never really get into her character. Her short stories have appeared in Harper’s and other magazines have been widely anthologized. Bone lays out every important event in the first chapter and then moves backwards in time from there. Oct 06, Elan Mudrow rated it it was amazing. Leila is a social worker in the Chinese community; Nina, the youngest, lives in New York and works as a tour guide for American groups visiting China.

The well-observed descriptions of life in San Fran’s Chinatown are probably the myene part about this book, but I think those detailed descriptive passages would feel mhenne at home in a journalistic context than a novel.
